The Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI) is hosting two upcoming lectures by Professor Michael E. Mann, a world-renowned climate scientist, Presidential Distinguished Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and a leading voice in climate change research and policy.

Professor Mann’s work has shaped public discourse on climate science, from his seminal “Hockey Stick” research on global temperature trends to his analysis of the forces driving climate misinformation. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from one of the most influential figures in the field.

Before the lectures, delegates are invited to join SMMI for coffee with the speaker at 14:30, and a reception following each lecture at 16:00.

 The first lecture is:

Beyond the Hockey Stick: Climate Lessons from The Common Era

6th May 2025, 15:00–16:00 | Charnock Lecture Theatre, National Oceanography Centre

Professor Michael E. Mann will explore how paleoclimate records and climate models of the past two millennia provide key insights into human-caused climate change. Over two decades ago, he and his co-authors published the iconic “Hockey Stick” curve, a powerful visualisation of unprecedented modern warming. This lecture will reveal how past climate history can help us understand the growing impact of human influence against natural variability.

Sponsored by the SMMI in partnership with the School of Ocean and Earth Science (SOES).
