SMMI Lecture, Science Under Siege; 7th May 2025, Southampton
The Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI) is hosting two upcoming lectures by Professor Michael E. Mann, a world-renowned climate scientist, Presidential Distinguished Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and a leading voice in climate change research and policy.
Professor Mann’s work has shaped public discourse on climate science, from his seminal “Hockey Stick” research on global temperature trends to his analysis of the forces driving climate misinformation. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from one of the most influential figures in the field.
Before the lectures, delegates are invited you to join SMMI for coffee with the speaker at 14:30, and a reception following each lecture at 16:00.
The second lecture is:
Science Under Siege
7th May 2025, 15:00–16:00 | Turner Sims, University of Southampton
Brought to you by the SMMI, this lecture will examine the forces behind the modern anti-science movement, known as the six "P"s: plutocrats, pros, politicians, polluters, petrostates, posers, pretenders, propagandists, and the press. Drawing on experiences in climate change and COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, Professor Mann will identify financial backers and offer a roadmap for countering anti-science narratives. A warning and a call to arms, this talk will highlight the urgency and agency needed to address this growing threat.
